SHINING LIGHT ON THE DARKEST PLACE IN THE WORLD: A NORTH KOREAN GIRL’S JOURNEY TO FREEDOM

Yeonmi ParkYeonmi Park will share her powerful story of survival in North Korea and her subsequent escape, the horrors of human trafficking and the need to bring freedom to all people of the world. A twenty two year old human rights activist and North Korean defector Yeonmi Park is fast becoming a leading voice of oppressed people around the world. Her escape from North Korea has given the world a window into the lives of its people. The BBC named her one of their Top Global Women. Born in Hyesan, North Korea, Yeonmi grew up in a society devoted to the worship of Dear Leader Kim Jong-Il and hatred for enemies of his regime. However, after watch- ing a pirated copy of the film Titanic, the veil of tyranny began to fall. Ms. Park had caught a glimpse of a free world that one day she would yearn to join.

 

 

THE QUAKER ORIGINS OF THE PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD Albert Churella

Historian Albert Churella will explain how Philadelphia’s Quaker merchants established the world’s largest business corporation. During the 1840’s those merchants feared that their city was falling behind rivals New York and Baltimore in the race for the West. In an effort to bolster the social wellbeing of their city, they founded a cooperative enterprise, aptly named the Pennsylvania Railroad, to span the breadth of the Commonwealth.

Foxhowe Feature Film:  Woman in Gold

Woman In Gold is the remarkable true story of one woman’s journey to reclaim her heritage and seek justice for what happened to her family. Sixty years after she fled Vienna during World War II, an elderly Jewish woman, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), starts her journey to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt’s famous painting ‘Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I’. Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), she embarks upon a major battle which takes them all the way to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court, and forces her to confront difficult truths about the past along the way.

BRUSHES WITH GREATNESS: MY COLLABORATIONS WITH GOLF’S GREATEST CHAMPIONS

?Buck Hill’s own Andrew C. Mutch, Ph.D is the foremost authority on the documentation, preservation and display of historic collections, specializing in the golf and country club environment. He is the founder and CEO of Golf Curator, Inc. and its subsidiary company, Club Curator, started in 2001. Previously, Dr. Mutch served as Director of the USGA Museum and Archives in Far Hills, NJ. While with the USGA he worked directly with the game’s greatest golfers, designing acclaimed exhibitions on Ben Hogan, Byron Nelson, Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. He is an accom- plished author, artist and presenter on topics relating to golf history and archival and museum management. In 2006 he earned a PhD in Museum and Gallery Studies from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.

An Evening with Beth Goldwater

Beth-Goldwater-7564Beth is one of Buck Hill’s newest cottagers and an award winning singer songwriter with a style reminding audiences of Madeleine Peyroux, Norah Jones and Melody Gardot. If weather is good she will perform in the courtyard at theFairway Grille; bring your friends, grab a drink and come and meet Beth.

Beth’s original song, L’Amour Fou is now screening at the Sundance Film Festival in the original documentary, Film Hawk beginning with the world premiere on January 24th.

From planting arboretums in the colonial period to protesting environ- mental destruction today, Quakers have had a distinctive approach to protecting creation. In addition to revealing what’s behind Quaker attitudes toward nature and stewardship, Eileen Flanagan will share her own story of feeling “led” (or called) to make this a major part of her life’s work through both her writing and her leadership in Earth Quaker Action Team, which is an innovative force in today’s climate change movement. Eileen Flanagan is the award-winning author of three books, most recently Renewable: One Woman’s Search for Simplicity, Faithfulness, and Hope. She speaks to international audiences on topics ranging from climate justice to Quaker spirituality. She lives in Philadelphia and serves as board chair of Earth Quaker Action Team, the small grassroots group that challenged a bank and won.

Frances Marrone

Francis Morrone is an architectural historian and writer. He is the author of eleven books, including “Guide to New York City Urban Landscapes” and, with Henry Hope Reed, “The New York Public Library: The Architecture and Decoration of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building” (W.W. Norton, 2011), as well as architectural guidebooks to New York City, Philadelphia, and Brook- lyn. He was for six and a half years an art and architecture critic for the New York Sun. He teaches architectural and urban history at the New York University School of Professional Studies where he is the recipient of the university’s Excellence in Teaching Award. He was named by Travel + Leisure magazine as one of the 13 best tour guides in the world. Francis will speak on one of the giants of modern urban planning, Robert Moses, and his extraordinary impact on New York City and his influence throughout the U.S. and beyond. Francis is a favorite veteran speaker at Foxhowe events, and we welcome back our good friend who always enlightens us with his knowledge, passion and charm.
